Why Gaming Requires Different Speed Metrics
Most people think internet speed means download speed. For gaming, that's only part of the story. While a fast download is useful for loading game assets, ping (latency) and jitter matter far more for real-time gameplay. Ping measures the round-trip time your data travels to the game server and back, measured in milliseconds (ms). Jitter is the variation in that time—consistency is everything in competitive play.
A 500 Mbps connection with 100ms ping will feel sluggish in shooters. A 25 Mbps connection with 20ms ping feels smooth. SpeedTrest measures all three metrics so you know exactly what's limiting your performance.
Benchmark: What Speed Do You Actually Need?
| Game Type | Min Download | Min Upload | Target Ping | Jitter Limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Casual (Singleplayer) | 5 Mbps | 1 Mbps | Any | Any |
| Team Games (Valorant, Overwatch) | 15 Mbps | 5 Mbps | <50ms | <10ms |
| Competitive FPS (CS2, Apex) | 25 Mbps | 5 Mbps | <30ms | <5ms |
| MMO/Battle Royale | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps | <60ms | <15ms |
| Streaming Gameplay | 50+ Mbps | 20+ Mbps | <40ms | <10ms |
These are real-world targets based on ISP performance data. Notice how upload speed and ping matter more than raw download speed for competitive gaming.

Run Speed Test →How to Run a Gaming Speed Test (Step-by-Step)
- Close background apps — Stop downloads, streaming, Discord, browser tabs. They pollute your results.
- Connect via Ethernet — WiFi adds latency variance. Use a wired connection if possible.
- Check your location — SpeedTrest auto-selects your nearest server. Confirm it's the region where your game servers live (EU, US East, Asia, etc.).
- Run the test — Click the start button and wait 30 seconds. Note your ping, jitter, download, and upload.
- Run it 3 times — Average the results. One outlier doesn't tell the story; consistency does.
- Compare against benchmarks — Check your numbers against the table above for your game type.
Common Gaming Lag Causes (And How to Fix Them)
High Ping (Latency)
If your test shows ping >80ms and you're in a developed region, your ISP or routing is the issue. You can:
- Contact your ISP and request a dedicated gaming connection or lower-latency tier
- Switch to a wired Ethernet connection (WiFi adds 10–50ms)
- Use a VPN to a server closer to your game's datacenters (if allowed by the game)
- Choose game servers in your region during selection menus
High Jitter (Inconsistent Ping)
Jitter causes rubber-banding and hit registration failures. Check for:
- WiFi interference — Switch to 5GHz band or move closer to the router
- Network congestion — Check if other users are downloading or streaming
- ISP packet loss — Run SpeedTrest at different times of day. Consistent jitter = ISP problem
- Outdated router firmware — Update your router's software
Low Upload Speed
You need upload speed to send your inputs to the server. If your test shows upload <3 Mbps in a competitive game, you'll experience lag spikes when talking in voice chat or streaming. Upgrade your plan or contact your ISP.
Why Ping Matters More Than You Think
In a game running at 60 fps, each frame lasts 16ms. If your ping is 50ms, your screen is already 3 frames behind reality. That delay is why pros play on 10–20ms connections. A 20ms difference in ping is the difference between a headshot and a miss in Valorant or CS2.
SpeedTrest's ping test is powered by Cloudflare's global network, meaning we can measure your latency to servers in 100+ countries. This helps you spot geographic routing issues that other tools miss.
When Should You Test Your Speed?
Gaming performance varies by time of day. Test:
- During your usual gaming hours (evening/night for most regions)
- Right before a ranked session
- After ISP maintenance or router resets
- If you suspect throttling (speeds drop at certain times)
Run tests over a week and track the results. If you see consistent patterns of high ping or jitter during peak hours, document them and contact your ISP with evidence.
Why SpeedTrest for Gaming?
Unlike basic speed tests, SpeedTrest prioritizes the metrics gamers actually care about: real-time ping measurement, jitter detection, and packet loss analysis. No account required, no misleading ads, just clean results in 30 seconds.
