How to Interpret Your Speed Test Results

If your download speed is coming in way lower than what your plan supposedly offers, here's what we check first:

• Are you testing on WiFi or wired connection? Wired connections via Ethernet are typically faster and more stable.
• How many devices are using your network? Other devices streaming or downloading can reduce available bandwidth.
• What time of day are you testing? Peak hours (evenings, weekends) may show slower speeds due to network congestion.
• Is your antenna properly installed and positioned? For FWA customers, outdoor antenna placement directly impacts performance.

Upload Speed

Upload speeds are typically lower than download speeds, but they're critical if you're doing anything that sends data back to the internet — we're talking video calls, cloud backups, streaming to Twitch, that kind of thing.

• Work from home and use video conferencing daily
• Upload large files to cloud storage or video hosting platforms
• Stream content or run a home-based business

If your upload speed is 5 Mbps or lower, you're going to hit real problems during group video calls or when you're pushing large files up to the cloud. We've tested this dozens of times, and the lag becomes noticeable fast.

Ping and Jitter

Rise Broadband customers on FWA typically experience higher ping times around 50–100 ms compared to fiber or cable users — that's just how wireless connections work. But here's the thing: it doesn't have to be a deal-breaker.

• Ping consistently above 150 ms may cause noticeable lag in gaming or video calls.
• Jitter above 30 ms indicates unstable connection quality and should be reported to Rise support.

Tips to Improve Your Rise Broadband Speed

For Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) Customers

• Check antenna alignment: Misaligned outdoor antennas are the #1 cause of slow FWA speeds. Ensure your antenna has a clear line-of-sight to the nearest Rise tower.
• Reduce obstacles: Trees, buildings, and metal structures block wireless signals. If possible, position your antenna away from obstructions.
• Use WiFi 6 router: If Rise provides an older router, upgrading to a modern WiFi 6 router can improve speeds and stability.
• Position router centrally: Place your router in a central location away from walls and metal objects.
• Test on wired connection: Use an Ethernet cable to test directly from the modem. This isolates WiFi issues and shows your true connection speed.

For All Customers

• Restart your modem and router: Unplug for 30 seconds, then plug back in. This resolves many temporary connection issues.
• Reduce network congestion: Turn off auto-updating apps, pause cloud backups, and close unused browser tabs before testing.
• Test at different times: Run multiple tests at different times of day to understand if your speeds vary by time or if issues are consistent.
• Contact Rise support: If your speeds are consistently 20% or more below your plan advertised speeds, contact Rise Broadband support with your speed test results as documentation.
